This is the 3rd episode of our Type Classification series. If you missed the first and second episodes, I highly recommend watching them before continuing with this episode (Learn Serif Fonts & Their Subcategories).

Today, we will focus on the Script and Blackletter categories.

Script Typefaces

Script typefaces defining feature.Type classification is the process of organizing typefaces into categories based on their style, design characteristics, and historical context.Script typefaces are a beautiful and artistic category of fonts that imitate handwriting or calligraphy. These typefaces are designed to look like they were written with a pen or brush, which gives them an elegant and personal touch. These typefaces are perfect for designs where elegance and emotion are important, such as wedding invitations, greeting cards, or branding for luxury products. The defining feature of script typefaces is their flowing and connected letterforms, which often resemble handwriting. They are not always easy to read in long paragraphs, but they work well for short, impactful text.

Types of Script Fonts

Script fonts are divided into three main types, and each type has its own style and purpose. The first type is Formal Script, which looks very elegant and polished. These fonts are great for fancy events, like weddings or formal parties. The second type is Casual Script, which is more relaxed and friendly. It’s perfect for designs that feel informal and fun, like party invitations or playful branding. Finally, there is Calligraphic Script, which looks like traditional calligraphy done with a pen or brush. It combines beauty with creativity and is often used for artistic or creative designs.

Blackletter typeface

Blackletter typefaces defining feature.Type classification is the process of organizing typefaces into categories based on their style, design characteristics, and historical context. Blackletter typeface, also known as Gothic script or Old English, is one of the oldest and most distinct type styles in the history of typography. They were widely used in Europe from the 12th to the 17th century for manuscripts, religious texts, and early printing presses, such as the Gutenberg Bible. Blackletter typefaces are easily recognized by their ornate, dense, and angular letterforms, which give them a dramatic and traditional appearance. They are often associated with historical or formal contexts, but they also appear in modern designs for their unique and bold aesthetic.

I believe you understand the basics of type classification. Look at the typefaces you see every day—on signs, packages, or websites—and try to classify them. Are they serif or sans-serif? Think about why they were chosen. With practice, you’ll start seeing fonts not just as text but as a powerful tool in design.

Share your favorite classifications or thoughts with me—I’d love to know! Keep learning, and I’ll see you in the next episode. (Learn Serif Fonts & Their Subcategories)
